Tourist attractions Liverpool
Capital of the county of Merseyside, in the North West of England, Liverpool rests on the east side of the estuary of the River Mersey, 350 kilometres from the capital. It has more than 466,000 inhabitants, which increases to 816,000 if we take into account the entire Metropolitan Area to which it belongs.
During the 18th century, it was an important port city with access to the Irish Sea, and like Bristol, it developed triangular trade across the Atlantic to Africa and the West Indies granting it great economic prosperity. Today, it is the most important port in the country after London.
Music and football lovers have more than enough reasons to travel to Liverpool. Not only to enjoy their great passions, The Beatles and Liverpool FC but because the city offers the visitor much more, such as museums, shops, bars and restaurants and beautiful Victorian architecture worth seeing, all under the umbrella of a most stimulating and friendly cityscape.
A trip to Liverpool is perfect as a weekend getaway or as a destination to visit on a tour of England. The city surprises because it is unique and famous throughout the world for its vibrant, historical, artistic and dynamic atmosphere.
Things to see in Liverpool
The city's most prominent historic buildings are the 1967 Metropolitan Cathedral, which has a unique design with a circular roof topped by a tower with several pinnacles, and Liverpool Cathedral, built with red sandstone and completed in 1978. Crafted in a modern Gothic style, from the top of Liverpool Cathedral, you can enjoy impressive views of the city. Both cathedrals are linked by Hope Street. On the other hand, St Luke's Church is partially ruined but maintains its beautiful facade surrounded by a charming garden. A few meters from here is the oldest Chinatown in Europe, with an imposing and colourful gateway, brought all the way from Shanghai.
Another of the best things to see in Liverpool is St. George's Hall, of enormous dimensions and built in a refined neoclassical style. The ceiling of the lobby leaves visitors speechless and it is home to a concert hall, several meeting rooms and the courthouse.
Pier Head is a place dominated by the so-called Three Graces of Liverpool: the Cunard Building, Port of Liverpool Building and Royal Liver Building, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Nearby, you can admire the Royal Albert Dock, inaugurated in 1846 and today a space for leisure and culture, with numerous museums, restaurants, food trucks and cafes, where the iconic 60-meter-high Ferris wheel also stands.
Sefton Park with its beautiful Victorian mirrored greenhouse called the Palm House is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax along the tree-lined paths.
Liverpool is the capital of British culture, and as such, it has a wide range of museums. The World Museum houses a planetarium and several collections dedicated to archaeology, ethnology and physics. The Merseyside Maritime Museum traces the seafaring heritage of the city whilst the Walker Art Gallery, is home to works by established artists. On the other hand, the Tate Liverpool, dedicated to modern art, is another must-see. Finally, the British Music Experience, which traces the musical history of the country and its most charismatic musicians such as The Beatles, Queen and Elton John, is one of the best places to visit in Liverpool.
Liverpool and The Beatles go hand in hand. Their fans can have an unforgettable time visiting the old haunts of John, Paul, George and Ringo. These include the mythical Cavern Club, where they began to play in the 60s, the famous bronze statue of the so-called "The Fantastic Four", as well as Penny Lane, the Magical Beatles Museum and The Beatles Story, two museums dedicated entirely to the history of the group.
The city is also known throughout the world for its football team, Liverpool F.C. Its iconic Anfield Stadium, with a capacity of 54,000 fans, is a must-see for fans of the sport and a tour of the stadium of one of the best things to do in Liverpool.
