Campeche is an old colonial city that for years was an important commercial port. Its baroque and old Spanish architecture is one of its great attractions, in addition to its old city walls, squares, temples and hamlets. Declared a World Heritage Site, among its points of interest are the Church of San Francisco de Campeche, the Plaza de la Independencia, the Nazarene Jesus Cathedral, the boardwalk, the Pedro Sainz de Baranda market, as well as it’s many artisan workshops. Surround the city are crystalline waters and sandy beaches and on its eastern border the Biosphere Reserve of Calakmul is located, one of the largest protected areas in Mexico.
