The capital city and cultural, economic and governmental centre of Denmark, Copenhagen sits across the two coastal islands of Zealand and Amager and is linked to the Swedish city of Mamo by the colossal Oresund Bridge. The most populous city in the country, a trip to Copenhagen is an unmissable stop on a tour of Scandinavia. It is famed for its rainbow coloured townhouses and for being home to a number of attractions related to the Danish Royal Family. Not too huge, but big enough to warrant an excellent public transport system, Copenhagen has many open spaces and parks to enjoy, from idyllic waterfront strolls along the Langelinie, to the immaculately landscaped Frederiksberg Gardens. Once a Viking fishing village, dating all the way back to the 10th century, the city was established as the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark in the early 15th century. Those interested in eco-friendly lifestyles will enjoy a holiday to Copenhagen as it is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, with bicycles outnumbering inhabitants and hundreds of kilometres of purpose-built cycle lanes.
