Interlaken

Tourist attractions Interlaken

Nestled in a valley between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is situated in the heart of the country and is known as the adventure capital of Switzerland. Many choose to travel to Interlaken as it is a jumping-off point for excursions into the Bernese Alps, but it's worth staying a while to enjoy the gorgeous landscapes of green meadows and mountains or wander around the idyllic old town, perched on the banks of the River Aare.

Interlaken is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Switzerland so you’ll find all the usual Swiss charms here, with shops selling Swiss chocolates, watches and cheese as well as plenty of cosy bars and eateries where you can unwind after a long day of sightseeing or hiking.

Interlaken is served by two railways stations, and from here you can travel deep into the Alps. More than 45 mountain railways, cable cars and chair lifts connect the town to some of the best ski slopes and natural attractions in the country.

Surrounded by the Jungfrau mountain range, a trip to Interlaken is a brilliant choice as you can take an endless number of day trips from Interlaken whilst enjoying the amenities of this well-established Alpine town.

Things to do in Interlaken

Once you’ve explored the town centre, strolled along the riverside promenade and visited the shops along Hoheweg Street, there are still plenty of things to see in Interlaken. Be sure to visit the Interlaken Monastery and Castle, an old Augustinian monastery complex, some of which dates back to the 12th-century. Admire its Gothic cloister and the tranquil castle grounds.

One of the best things to do is to travel to Harder Kulm, a fabulous viewpoint situated 1322 metres above sea level. A funicular connects Interlaken-Ost station to Harder Kulm, where you can soak up amazing views of the town, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz from a viewing platform. Up here you’ll also find a Panoramic Restaurant and frequent live music performances.

A trip to Switzerland is all about epic views and the Schynige Platte Railway offers spectacular landscapes in abundance. Interlaken is the northern terminal of this historic rack railway, first opened in 1893. The cogwheel train travels along a 7.3-kilometre track, reaching 1420 metres at its highest point. During the last stages of the journey, travellers can admire amazing views of the mountains of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. Arriving at Schynige Platte you can enjoy panoramic views from the viewing platform and stroll through a Botanical Alpine Garden.

One of the best things to do in Interlaken if you travel with children is to visit the Adventure Park, where fun-loving adventurers can enjoy tree-top courses, swings, bridges and zip lines.
