What to see in United States
Alaska
Tourist attractions Alaska
The largest and most sparsely populated US state, a holiday to Alaska will present you with wild open spaces, mountains, mighty glaciers, rivers, forests, and an epic, wild and untouched landscape. Purchased by the US from the Russian Empire in 1867, Alaska invites visitors to discover the ‘call of the wild’. Unlike almost anywhere in the world, Alaska is so huge that visitors have the opportunity to walk in the vast wilderness where very few have ventured before. It is the dream travel destination for the most adventurous travelers. Indigenous communities have lived in the territory for thousands of years, ensuring a rich and colorful history.
Nature lovers are also sure to enjoy a tour of Alaska as this vast state is abundant with native wildlife including the famous grizzly bears, wolves and moose, and the rivers are full of brilliant fresh salmon. Denali National Park is one of the biggest attractions; a huge space home to the Denali mountain, North America’s highest peak.
Alaska is home to three separate climatic zones; arctic, continental and transitional, giving visitors a fantastic variety of landscapes to explore. Between September and April, the cold winter brings with it the chance of sighting the Aurora Borealis, especially the more northerly you travel. The best way to get around is my road, so many package holidays to Alaska include car hire.
Skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, glacier trekking, and kayaking are just some of the numerous outdoor pursuits that are popular in Alaska. What the state might lack in cafes and shops, it makes up for in adventure activities. Alaskan’s like to get out and ‘do’ things.
Anchorage is the most populous and largest city and has all the amenities that are so few and far between outside of the cities. Juneau is the capital, located on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan Panhandle, and is the city from which most of the Inside Passage cruises depart, setting off for whale watching and glacier spotting expeditions.
