Kaikoura is a good base for all sorts of outdoor activities: it is also a good spot to eat crayfish (in the maori language, kai means food”, and koura means crayfish). The special charm of Kaikoura is the close encounters with marine mammals: in the coastal water, there are whales, sea lions and dolphins living there all year round. Whale spotting trips sail several times a day and the local seal colony always makes for spectacular entertainment.
