Best time to visit the Maldives

Deciding when to travel to the Maldives is easy since any time is ideal to visit this paradise. It could be said that you can travel to the Maldives all year round given the fact that its climate is always ideal.

Best time to travel to the Maldives

The Maldives have a mild climate all year round, with a dry season and a rainy season. The months of the dry season are mainly January, February and March. The rainy season is concentrated between May and October with June and July being the rainiest months. The other months, such as April, November and December are ideal for visiting the beaches and enjoying the good weather.

On the other hand, the high tourist season is particularly concentrated in the month of March, so prices will be higher and it will be more difficult to find accommodation. Between December and April however, with the exception of March, is the best time to enjoy the underwater life of this archipelago.

If you want to go snorkelling, diving or surfing on the islands, avoid June and July due to the risk of storms. It's better to choose May, August and also September and October since there is less chance of rain. Another perfect time of year for swimming is between November and December which, although the temperatures are not so high, are still warm, and there will be fewer tourists.

In summary, you should know that the average temperature of the archipelago of Maldives is 30ºC for almost the whole year. Its tropical climate make this country a climatic paradise in spite of the monsoons. Talking of monsoons, the islands are affected by the monsoon from the northeast between November and April, whilst from May to October the monsoon from the southwest appears.

However, the only months to be wary of due to rain are June and July. For the rest of the year, deciding when to travel to the Maldives is no problem at all. Below we look at the best time to visit the islands depending on the aims of your trip.

The best time to visit the capital of the Maldives is between January and April, which is when less rain falls in this area of the Maldives. However, throughout the year the average temperature is around 29ºC so it is always a good time to travel to Male. Keep in mind that May, August and October are the rainiest months.

If you choose April to visit Malé you will have an average temperature of 30ºC, whilst if you travel in January it will be 28ºC. Bearing this in mind, the best thing to do is choose a month during the dry season with a moderate temperature.

When to travel to Seenu

If you like snorkelling and you want to lose yourself in crystal waters and white sandy beaches, the month of November is considered a great time to visit Seenu, also known as the Addu Atoll. The dry season is also a good option for enjoying this part of the Maldives, but you will find more tourists and fewer travel deals.

Avoid June and July if you want to avoid tropical storms, but any other month of the year is perfect for exploring the underwater world of this paradise archipelago.

When to travel to Addu

This city in the south of the Maldives is a lure for tourists who want to relax in peace and quiet. Nearby, there are various uninhabited islands to explore. To get to know the traditional communities and travel with good weather, November is a perfect month, both for the temperature and the price.

Also, remember to plan your trip during the dry season and avoid the summer months if you want to escape the monsoon downpours.

When to travel to Maafushi

Another of the most popular destinations in the Maldives is Maafushi, home to picture-perfect beaches and known for its watersports. Diving and snorkelling lovers mostly choose to travel here during the popular month of March.

As on the other islands, November is the ideal month to find great offers and fewer tourists. January and February are also good months since it is the dry season and the temperatures are perfect for spending time on the beach.

When to travel to the protected area of Hidhadhoo

If you like nature and you want to visit the Addu National Park, Eidhigali Kilhi or Koattey, try to visit this area between January and March, preferably January and February. The temperature will be 29ºC, and you can guarantee dry weather.

Remember to avoid the months where the monsoon is more prominent since travelling between islands and taking day trips can be challenging during the rainy season.
