Touch down in Lima, the capital of Peru, situated on the scenic Pacific Coast. Transfer to the hotel, get settled and spend the rest of the day exploring the city's colonial streets and magical plazas at your leisure. 2nd Day: Lima - Cuzco - Sacred Valley
Breakfast at the hotel. Leave Lima behind today as you transfer to the airport to catch a short flight to Cuzco. Arrive in Cuzco, the former Inca capital, and transfer to the spectacular Sacred Valley. As you journey through incredible mountain landscapes, stop along the route at Awanakancha (no guide, only driver) and savour the opportunity to explore this living museum, where ancient customs and traditions have been preserved across the centuries. 5th Day: Cuzco - Aguas Calientes
Breakfast at the hotel. An exciting visit to Machu Picchu awaits you this morning as you set off for the train station to board the Expedition Train to Aguas Calientes, admiring the landscape along the way! Alternatively, if you'd like to trek the famous Inca Trail, why not opt for our optional Inca Trail experience, for a truly memorable journey to Machu Picchu!* Arrive and transfer to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu*, one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World and a truly captivating sight, nestled high in the Peruvian Andes. Spend some time discovering the ruins and complex terraces and enjoy a tour of the different sections of the site. Finally, return to Aguas Calientes and get settled at your hotel. The evening is free to explore this hill town at your leisure and perhaps dine in one of the excellent local restaurants. Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
Please note: The baggage policy on board the Expedition train is 1 bag or backpack per person weighing a maximum of max. 5kg / 11lb.

* Optional 2 Day Inca Trail & Expedition Train Experience (Day 1): From the Sacred Valley, board the Expedition Train to Aguas Calientes, disembarking at kilometre 104 to begin your adventure on the famous Inca Trail! The first stop of the day is Chachabamba archaeological complex and a nearby waterfall, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. In the afternoon, continue along the final stage of the Inca Trail to Puerto del Sol, for breathtaking views of the Machu Picchu citadel from above. From here, transfer by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes and enjoy a relaxing evening, perhaps visiting the therapeutic hot springs.
Optional Day 1 Inca Trail total walking time: 7-8 hours (15 km). Maximum altitude: 2,650 metres above sea level.

6th Day: Aguas Calientes - Cuzco
Breakfast at the hotel. Leave Aguas Calientes behind, as you head to the train station to catch a return train back to Cuzco, the old Inca-era capital famed for its beautiful colonial architecture and thriving arts scene. Arrive, transfer to the hotel and enjoy your first evening in Cuzco at your leisure, exploring its lively restaurants and bars. Overnight stay in Cuzco.
* Optional 2 Day Inca Trail & Expedition Train Experience (Day 2): Today you'll finally have the chance to explore the incredible Inca site of Machu Picchu! Take a short bus ride to the site where you'll enjoy a 2-hour guided tour with a specialised guide who will reveal all the secrets of this wonder of the world! Enjoy some free time to explore the site and take photos at your leisure before returning to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cuzco. 7th Day: Cuzco
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, set off on a fascinating half-day tour of Cuzco. Begin in the iconic Plaza de Armas, and visit the Cathedral. From here, walk to the Koricancha Temple, an impressive ancient Inca palace, in honour of the Sun God. Today, a Dominican church stands on the site.
