In the Footsteps of the Incas

Breakfast at the hotel. An exciting visit to Machu Picchu awaits you this morning as you set off for the train station to board the Expedition Train to Aguas Calientes, admiring the landscape along the way! Alternatively, if you'd like to trek the famous Inca Trail, why not opt for our optional Inca Trail experience, for a truly memorable journey to Machu Picchu!* Arrive and transfer to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu*, one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World and a truly captivating sight, nestled high in the Peruvian Andes. Spend some time discovering the ruins and complex terraces and enjoy a tour of the different sections of the site. Finally, return to Aguas Calientes and get settled at your hotel. The evening is free to explore this hill town at your leisure and perhaps dine in one of the excellent local restaurants. Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.

Please note: The baggage policy on board the Expedition train is 1 bag or backpack per person weighing a maximum of max. 5kg / 11lb.

* Backpacks or bags taken into Machu Picchu must not exceed 40x35x20cms or have a capacity larger than 20Lts and must not contain single-use plastic bottles or bags. Backpacks or bags that exceed the indicated measurements can be left in storage for approx. $2 per bag.

* Optional 2 Day Inca Trail & Expedition Train Experience (Day 1): From the Sacred Valley, board the Expedition Train to Aguas Calientes, disembarking at kilometre 104 to begin your adventure on the famous Inca Trail! The first stop of the day is Chachabamba archaeological complex and a nearby waterfall, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. In the afternoon, continue along the final stage of the Inca Trail to Puerto del Sol, for breathtaking views of the Machu Picchu citadel from above. From here, transfer by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes and enjoy a relaxing evening, perhaps visiting the therapeutic hot springs. 

Optional Day 1 Inca Trail total walking time: 7-8 hours (15 km). Maximum altitude: 2,650 metres above sea level. 

Please note: If you choose the optional Inca Trail & Expedition Train experience it will replace the standard itinerary for this day and the following day. 

This optional operates on Tuesday, Thursday and Satuday with a minimum of 2 pax and a maximum of 10 pax.

Breakfast at the hotel. Leave Aguas Calientes behind, as you head to the train station to catch a return train back to Cuzco, the old Inca-era capital famed for its beautiful colonial architecture and thriving arts scene. Arrive, transfer to the hotel and enjoy your first evening in Cuzco at your leisure, exploring its lively restaurants and bars. Overnight stay in Cuzco.

* Optional 2 Day Inca Trail & Expedition Train Experience (Day 2): Today you'll finally have the chance to explore the incredible Inca site of Machu Picchu! Take a short bus ride to the site where you'll enjoy a 2-hour guided tour with a specialised guide who will reveal all the secrets of this wonder of the world! Enjoy some free time to explore the site and take photos at your leisure before returning to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cuzco. Arrive in Cuzco and rejoin the standard itinerary as stated above.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today, set off on a fascinating half-day tour of Cuzco. Begin in the iconic Plaza de Armas, and visit the Cathedral. From here, walk to the Koricancha Temple, an impressive ancient Inca palace, in honour of the Sun God. Today, a Dominican church stands on the site. Finally, visit the lively San Blas neighbourhood, known for its artists, shops and artisan workshops. Spend the remainder of the day at your leisure, soaking up the atmosphere of the city and sampling the local cuisine. We recommend an optional photography workshop to see this incredible city in new ways!* Overnight stay in Cuzco.

*Optional Cuzco Photography Workshop: Move away from the tourist route to discover the real Cuzco with this unique photography workshop. Using either your mobile device or camera, follow a professional photographer around the city to learn how to capture the essence of Cuzco in unique and exciting ways! This excursion is a fun and hands-on way to discover the hidden corners of Cuzco. 

Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy a day at your leisure to explore the sights of Cuzco. Why not explore the trendy neighborhood of San Blas, known for its artisan stores and beautiful San Blas Plaza, or pay a visit to the historic Qoricancha Temple? Alternatively, why not opt for a full-day excursion to the incredible Palccoyo Mountain, known for its rainbow-colored appearance!* Overnight stay in Cuzco. 

* Optional Full-Day Excursion to Palccoyo Mountain: After a 3-hour journey from Cuzco, arrive at the town of Combapata in the South Valley. From here, begin a 1-hour guided hike to Palccoyo. The Mountain of Seven Colors, Palccoyo is one of the most astounding natural wonders in Peru. Arrive and explore the rainbow-colored mountain at your leisure, taking photos and soaking up the views. Afterwards, continue walking towards the Stone Forest and the Ausangate viewpoint. Return along the same route and head back to Cuzco, stopping to enjoy a packed lunch box along the way.

Breakfast at the hotel. Bid farewell to Cuzco as you transfer to the airport to catch a flight back to Lima. Arrive and head to the transfer counter to take a shuttle to the hotel. The evening is free to relax and enjoy your final moments in Peru. Overnight stay in Lima.

Breakfast at the hotel. Sadly, it's time to bring your incredible adventure through Peru to an end. At the indicated time, transfer to the airport for a flight back to the UK/Ireland.**

* If you choose an early morning return flight, you'll enjoy your stay at the hotel until the indicated time of transfer to the airport. The airport transfer will take place the night before the date indicated on the ticket for return flights that depart between 00:00 and 04:00.
