9th Day: Longyearbyen

arrow-icon

Breakfast at the hotel. Fuel up for an action-packed day ahead. Today you’ll hike to Blomsterdalshøgda and visit the Global Seed Vault, followed by a wildlife photography tour around Longyearbyen.

Start with a hike to the top of Blomsterdalshøgda, rising about 320 meters above sea level. From up here, enjoy spectacular views of Adventfjorden, a narrow inlet framed by glaciers and mountains. Along the way, learn about the area's rich coal mining history, and keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife, like the elusive Arctic fox.

On your way back, stop at the entrance to the world-famous Svalbard Global Seed Vault, home to over 1.3 million seed samples, safeguarding the world’s crops. After the scenic hike, return to the hotel before heading out on the wildlife photography tour.

Depending on the season and weather, the focus changes: between May and September, you’ll have the best chances to spot and photograph Arctic birds, while October to April is ideal for general nature shots. If you’re visiting during Northern Lights season, cameras will be ready to capture the aurora, starry skies, polar foxes, and Svalbard reindeer even in the dark.

After a full day of adventure and photography, back to the hotel. Overnight stay in Longyearbyen.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you’ll go on a full-day Billefjorden, Nordenskiöld Glacier, and Pyramiden boat tour.* Transfer to the port and board the vessel for an unforgettable Arctic voyage. Be on the lookout for wildlife, including whales, seals, and the many birds at Diabasodden Bird Cliff.

With a bit of luck, a polar bear might even make an appearance. Your expert guide will share insights about Longyearbyen's history and the natural beauty of the surrounding fjords and glaciers.

If Pyramiden is accessible (usually around late May/early June until late October/early November), a Russian guide will welcome you to this former mining settlement, now an Arctic ghost town, and lead you through some of the abandoned buildings. But stay alert, polar bears occasionally roam the area, so it’s essential to stick together!

On the return to Longyearbyen, you’ll pass Skansbuktaa, a bay in Billefjorden. Known for its towering cliffs, deep glacial valleys, and abundant wildlife, it also holds cultural significance. Your guide will recount the tragic history of Svenskhuset (the Swedish House).

*The wildlife and sights you’ll encounter during the boat tour are dependent on the time of year and weather conditions.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today is a free day to explore at your own pace. To experience more of this magical region, we recommend joining an exciting snowmobile safari to the east coast* or a glacier safari.** Overnight stay in Longyearbyen.

*Optional snowmobile safari: Transfer to the expedition center. Get suited and booted, and after receiving instructions on how to operate the snowmobile, head out into the wild. Cover 119 miles across the Svalbard landscape, over vast plains and through glacier systems, a humbling experience that puts things in perspective.

Along the way, make stops to enjoy the scenery and feel the Arctic temperatures as you travel toward the East Coast of Spitsbergen. Colder conditions mean more sea ice, so polar bear sightings are possible. Lunch is included.

If weather conditions allow, you’ll return via a different route, offering new sights and experiences.

**Optional glacier safari: Embark on an exciting safari in an open rigid inflatable boat (RIB). Get ready for close-up, nature-based experiences in Isfjorden, Svalbard’s second-largest fjord. Hear the thundering sounds of glaciers on the move, and spot Arctic wildlife such as the northern fulmar, black-legged kittiwake, and puffin. Your guide will take you near the glaciers to glimpse wildlife on the ice floes while you enjoy lunch and storytelling.

Which glacier you visit varies daily, as your guide chooses the destination based on weather and ice conditions to ensure the best possible experience.

Important: Snowmobile safari is not compatible with glacier safari. yu must choose only one of them on this day.
