Northern expedition: Lofoten & Tromsø

Breakfast at the hotel. Prepare to immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes of the central and western Lofoten Islands on a full-day tour. Visit the Lofotr Museum to learn about Viking history and culture. Along the way, stop at the charming Bøstad Museum, the picturesque villages of Leknes and Reine, and the famous Ramberg Beach*, celebrated for its breathtaking scenery. Each stop provides unique insights and photo opportunities for a memorable day in the heart of Lofoten. 

The rest of the day is free, and during the summer season, you can choose to join our optional activity: evening kayaking in Svolvær.** Overnight stay in Svolvær.

**Optional evening kayaking in Svolvær: Perfect for beginners and experienced kayakers alike, this evening kayak departs fromSvolvær and offers a unique perspective of Lofoten’s coastline. Paddle calm waters while marveling at dramatic mountains, soaking in the quiet, raw beauty of the surroundings—the perfect opportunity for photography. No prior experience is required.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today, participate in the rich culture of the Sami people with a visit to a traditional farm in Sortland. Learn about their customs, reindeer herding, and way of life. After your cultural experience, board a ferry* from Fiskebøl to Melbu, where stunning coastal views await.

Upon arrival in Harstad, take time to settle in and explore this charming town. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, soaking in the beauty and culture of your surroundings! Overnight stay in Harstad.

Total transfer distance: approximately 4-5 hours by bus (200 km) and ferry.

*If the group consists of fewer than 10 passengers, the ferry will operate in reverse direction, from Melbu to Fiskebøl, coinciding with the Harstad–Svolvær travel day.

Breakfast at the hotel. This morning, embark on a scenic ferry ride* from Harstad to Tromsø, keeping in mind that this is a public transportation service, so schedules may vary or be subject to cancellation without notice. Once you arrive in Tromsø, join your tour leader for an engaging walking tour of this vibrant city, rich in history and culture.

After that, you’ll have some free time to explore at your own pace or, depending on the season, join some exciting optional activities, like the aurora dinner cruise**, Arctic summer seafood cruise***, or cod tasting experience.**** Please note that the cod tasting experience, cannot be combined with any of the other optional activities offered on this day. Overnight stay in Tromso.

Total transfer distance:  approximately 3 hours by ferry (300 km).

*If the Harstad–Tromsø ferry does not operate in the morning, departure will be later in the day. As a result, arrival in Tromsø may be in the evening, and the walking tour will therefore take place at night.

**Optional aurora dinner cruise: Aboard a quiet hybrid-electric ship, take in the otherworldly atmosphere of an Arctic night. Cruise through the icy waters surrounding Tromsø island, sailing past snow-covered mountains and iconic landmarks such as the Arctic Cathedral. 

Enjoy a locally sourced, seasonal three-course meal while the friendly crew shares personal stories and local knowledge about the waters and awe-inspiring landscapes. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights may make an appearance.

***Optional Arctic summer seafood cruise: Before setting sail, you’ll be greeted by guides and a welcome drink. During the cruise, enjoy sweeping views of the city and Arctic landscapes through panoramic windows. You’ll be served a delicious seafood platter featuring the finest Norwegian fish and seafood, including snow crab and mussels. 

As well as tasting the best of Norway’s fjords, the guides will share some fascinating stories and insights into the region's history, culture, and deep relationship with seafood. As the evening unfolds, buy a drink from the bar and watch the sun paint the mountain peaks in the soft glow unique to the Arctic summer.

****Optional cod tasting experience: Celebrate cod fishing’s rich maritime heritage with a visit to the Full Steam. Spread across multiple floors, the museum offers an immersive experience combining storytelling, tasting, and insight into Norwegian and Arctic culture. 

Begin with the Cod Fisheries Trilogy, a guided tasting and storytelling experience where you’ll sample cod roe, learn about its origins, and explore the history of cod liver oil.

Continue through exhibitions dedicated to Sea Sami culture and traditions, the Arctic environment, and stunning photography of the Northern Lights. If the Harstad–Tromsø ferry does not operate in the morning, the departure will take place later in the day. This may result in arrival in Tromsø at night, and therefore the walking tour will be conducted in the evening. The experience concludes with the Seafarer’s Exhibition, showcasing maritime history through historic vessels and authentic artifacts. During your visit, you’re also welcome to stop by the museum’s restaurant and bar.
