France’s October 2026 Photo Exhibitions

2026 happens to be the bicentenary of photography, and Paris’s institutions are leaning into it hard this year. If you’re visiting France in October and photography is your thing, there’s more going on than a quick search might suggest, you just have to know where to look beyond the big art fairs.

Art Basel Paris: the headline event, with photography in the mix

Art Basel Paris, the successor to what was once Paris+ by Art Basel, takes over the Grand Palais October 23 to 25, 2026, with a vernissage on October 22. This is its fifth edition and the first under new director Karim Crippa, bringing together 211 exhibitors from 41 countries across three sectors: Galeries, Emergence, and Premise. It’s primarily a contemporary art fair covering painting, sculpture, and installation as much as photography, but photographic work from both historic and contemporary artists shows up throughout, and the “Emergence” sector in particular is a good place to catch newer photographic talent making a name for itself.

The real photography event: it’s in November, not October

Worth knowing if you’re specifically chasing photography: Paris Photo, the world’s largest fair dedicated entirely to the medium, doesn’t actually fall in October. Its 2026 edition runs November 12 to 15 at the Grand Palais, its 29th year, with over 200 exhibitors and a program built around the photography bicentenary. If your trip has any flexibility, pushing into mid-November puts you right in the middle of what’s genuinely the city’s biggest photography event of the year.

What’s actually on in October

If you’re set on October specifically, a few genuine photography exhibitions are running:

• Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection: a major photography exhibition drawing on masterworks from the Pinault Collection opens October 7, 2026, and runs through January 18, 2027, timed deliberately to the photography bicentenary.
• Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF, François-Mitterrand site): “Scènes, signes, sensations,” an exhibition on Japanese photography, opens September 29, 2026 and runs through January 31, 2027, so all of October falls within its run.
• Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP): a tribute exhibition dedicated to a noted fashion photographer opens September 30, 2026 and continues through January 17, 2027, again spanning the whole month.
• Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson: a show featuring the work of an Ivorian photographer, the second laureate of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès’s Latitudes program, runs through October 4, 2026, so it’s only open for the first few days of the month if you’re visiting later in October.

Beyond these, the Fondation Cartier-Bresson and MEP both maintain year-round photography programming worth checking closer to your travel dates, since exhibitions change on their own schedules independent of any single festival.

The bigger picture
