Our Study Identified Each State’s ‘Springiest’ Day of the Year.

If you’ve ever travelled around the U.S. in March or April, you will know how misleading the word “spring” can be.

In some parts, people will have already been eating al fresco in light clothing for weeks already. Whereas in other parts, grimy snow is still a feature piled up on sidewalks.

While technically the equinox might put spring on the calendar, the feel of spring arrives at very different times, depending on where you live.

We undertook a study to identify the ‘springiest’ day of the year in different parts of the country.

First up, we started with the spring equinox on March 21 – this date marks the official start of spring from an astronomical point of view.

We then analyzed other factors such as the average timing of the last spring freeze in different parts of the country, since that’s usually when winter finally stops threatening gardens and new growth.

Because plants typically need a little time after the final frost to properly leaf out, our analysis also included a point three weeks later, when greenery tends to be noticeably returning.

Averaging those markers together produced an approximate “springiest day” for each state.

Based on the data, this is what we found:

Key Findings

Spring doesn’t arrive everywhere – it travels

Rather than appearing suddenly nationwide, spring moves across the United States like a slow seasonal front. In the southern states, it settles in first.

Louisiana, for example, reaches its “springiest” point around March 14, when mild weather and fresh growth tend to line up.

But move north, and the calendar keeps creeping forward.

In places like North Dakota and Montana, that same moment doesn’t arrive until May 1, while Wyoming brings up the rear on May 7.

From the Gulf Coast to the northern Rockies, the country’s version of peak spring takes roughly seven to eight weeks to complete the journey.

The Southeast seems to hit the seasonal sweet spot

South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, and Arkansas experience their ‘springiest’ days within the same general window – a time that most people associate the strongest with beautiful spring weather – late March to early April.

The South appears to enjoy a fairly balanced transition out of winter.

The majority of states enjoy their ‘Springiest Days’ in Mid-April

One of the clearest patterns we noticed in the data is just how many states enjoy their springiest days in the same narrow band of mid-April, and within the same narrow band around mid-April.

Once peak spring weather reaches the heartland states, it tends to arrive quickly and broadly.

Elevation delays spring just as much as latitude

What was interesting was the effect of elevation on influencing when the perfect spring days happen.

For example, states such as Colorado (April 26) and Utah (April 28) experience their springiest dates later than parts of the Midwest that sit further north.

The principal driver is elevation. Higher altitudes allow cold air to linger longer into the season, delaying that point when mild temperatures and new growth really begin to take hold.

Several northern states share almost the exact same spring moment

Across the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, there’s an unusual cluster.

Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Maine, and Idaho all experience peak spring around April 23. Despite being scattered across very different landscapes, these states appear to reach their most “spring-like” conditions at almost the same time.

The northern Plains are among the last to thaw

If winter seems stubborn in the Plains, the numbers back that up.

South Dakota reaches peak spring on April 24, but neighbouring states take even longer. North Dakota and Montana both experience their springiest days on May 1, placing them among the last parts of the country to truly settle into the season.

Spring travel works best when you follow the season north

For travellers, this slow-moving seasonal pattern creates an interesting opportunity. Instead of treating spring as a single travel period, it can almost be followed like a moving event.

Early spring trips in March tend to favor the South and Gulf states. By April, comfortable conditions shift toward the Midwest and East Coast. And by late April or early May, some of the most pleasant spring weather occurs in the northern states and those at higher elevations.

Final Thoughts

After long, harsh winters, many people consider Spring as their favorite season.

It is the first opportunity in the year to travel further afield, perhaps a weekend away, or a longer road trip, to experience the joys of Spring weather.

It might be a quick trip to the coast, a cabin in the hills, or just a long scenic drive with no real destination in mind. The trees are starting to turn green again, al fresco dining returns, and the country suddenly opens up.

We hope that our ‘springiest’ day study will be a good way to encourage everyone to make the most of that first really perfect spring day when it arrives.
