Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is a group of waterfalls located on the Niagara River, in the northeast of North America, on the border between the United States and Canada. Located about 236 meters above sea level, its fall is approximately 64 meters.
They include three sorts of independent waterfalls: the “Canadian waterfall” (Ontario), the “American waterfall” (New York) and the smaller “Bride’s veil waterfall”. Although they are not too hight neither too large, they are the most voluminous in North America, because through them passes all the water of the Great Lakes. Between the Canadian and American falls, you will find the Island of the Goat.
Since they were discovered by Europeans, they have become very popular, not only for its beauty but also as a source of energy and a challenging project for environmental conservation. They are a place of tourism shared by the cities of New York and Ontario.
The name “Niagara” comes from an Iroquois word meaning “thunder of water”. The original inhabitants of the region were the Ongiara, an Iroquois tribe called the neutrals by the French conquerors, who found in them help as mediators of disputes with other tribes.
