When is the best time to visit Cuba

If you still don’t know when to travel to Cuba, what you most need to keep in mind to choose your dates is the climate. With two main seasons and a tropical climate, Cuba is one of the favourite tourism destinations in the world.

The best time to travel to Cuba

The two main seasons of this Caribbean archipelago are the dry and the rainy season. The former is from November to April, while the latter consists of the months from May to October. The worst months are during the rainy season, when cyclones batter the country. These usually take place between June and the beginning of November.

Then again, Cuba has an average temperature that ranges between 25ºC and 30ºC, which is ideal for enjoying its magnificent beaches and natural environment.  Although, during the rainy season, humidity is eighty percent, which makes the heat feel considerably hotter. For this reason, the majority of tourists choose to visit the country from November to April.

Something else to keep well in mind if you travel to Cuba between June and October is the hurricane season. Of course, the country has a warning system to avoid harm to people and damage to property, but even if the cyclone is not particularly damaging, it will rain very heavily. For this reason, you should avoid this season if you want to have good weather and not have to worry about cancellations.

On the other hand, the area of Guantanamo Bay has temperatures reaching 40ºC during the dry season. In contrast, in the mountainous regions the temperature is more pleasant, as it does not rise above 20ºC, but at night it can drop to 0ºC.

In summary, we could say that if you are still unsure about when to travel to Cuba, November and December are the best months. The temperatures are milder, but it is still a good time to enjoy the beaches, as the water temperature is good. Between January and March are also good months and it gets hotter in April.

When to travel to La Habana

Tourists travel to La Habana throughout the year, as its tropical climate means temperatures oscillate between 25ºC and 30ºC. The lowest temperature is 18ºC, so you will never be cold in this city. Of course, the dry season is the best time to visit La Habana, that is, between December to May.

If you want to enjoy everything that Cuban capital has to offer, avoid the months of June to October as much as possible, as the hurricanes may appear. Although, on the other hand, during the rainy season, hotels are cheaper and you will find more tour and organised travel offers.

When to travel to Cienfuegos and Villa Clara

If your trip includes Cienfuegos on the Majagua peninsula, which is also known as the Pearl of the South, the best months are from December to May. Avoid August and September as they have the most rain.  Alternatively, the months with the best climate for travelling to this part of Cuba are February and March, as there is no, or virtually no rain, and the temperature is pleasant.

Villa Clara is one of the central regions of Cuba, and is bordered by Cienfuegos. To visit all that this region has to offer, it is best to choose the dry season and to organise your trip between December and May. Preferably between January and February, so you can visit its magnificent beaches and cays, and its rich architecture.

When to travel to Varadero and Matanzas

Without a doubt, the best time to visit Varadero, as opposed to the rest of the country, is during the rainy season, that is, between July and September.  You will encounter a maximum temperature of 31ºC with abundant short-term passing rain.

If you want to avoid the hurricanes in this Cuban region, it is best that you don’t travel between August and November. Nonetheless, the hotels are well prepared for the cyclones, so if you cannot change your travel dates, you can still visit the country with complete peace of mind.

When to travel to Cayo Largo

If your trip to Cuba includes a visit to Cayo Largo, make a note of the months to avoid. Which in this case are May, September and October. The reason is that during these months the largest amount of rain falls. In contrast, between December and May, the climate is much more favourable.

Perhaps May would be the best time to travel to this region, as the climate is good and it is the mid-tourist season, which means better prices and lower visitor numbers.

Whatever you decide, you now have all the information you need to decide when to travel to Cuba. All that you need to do is plan your route and choose the months that are best adapted to your trip.
