Denmark sits at a unique point between several distinct climatic regions. In the western part of the country, the climate is Atlantic, while the eastern parts of the country have a continental-influenced climate. In winter, the days are dark and short, but you can enjoy between 17 and 20 hours of daylight during the summer.
High season in Denmark
The country is usually packed with tourists during the months of July and August, so some visitors try to avoid those dates and advance their trip to May and June when the weather is already mild enough for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Spring in Denmark
Spring is a popular season for those travellers who don’t mind a chill in the air. Surprisingly, it is also drier than the fall months. Until March, frosts can still occur and temperatures can range between 10ºC and 15ºC. At the end of May, the Aalborg Carnivalis celebrated, an event in which thousands of people take to the streets dressed in colourful clothes to celebrate the triumph of spring over winter. The Beer Festival also takes place, where you can taste the best craft brews in the country!
Summer in Denmark
The best time to travel to Denmark may be summer as the days are very long and pleasant between May and September. Tourists and Danes take to the streets to make the most of the weather. The sun rises around 3:30 a.m. and does not set until 10 p.m.
The Viking Festival begins in late June and runs for two weeks, as the brave, bearded Vikings perform Norse sagas in the open air. It is also recommended to visit the Maritime Research Center in Copenhagen and sail through the Roskilde Fjord aboard a traditional Viking ship.
Summer is a great time to listen to the singing trees at Aalborg Music Park. This park is located north of Jutland, about a four-hour drive from Copenhagen.
Autumn in Denmark
Autumn in Denmark is quite cool and the weather can be a bit unpredictable at times, so it is advisable to bring waterproofs. The temperatures are not too cold yet, so it is still a good time to go hiking or cycling.
Until the end of September, Tivoli Gardens presents Fredagsrock in Plænen, an open-air concert every Friday. You can also visit the CPH: PIX, the Copenhagen film festival, which lasts for two weeks, between September and October.
Autumn is a good time to go to Legoland in Billund, as it will be much less crowded. This is also the best time to visit the Wadden Sea National Park, where millions of migratory birds can be seen making their journey, and groups of seals in their breeding colonies. If you are in Copenhagen, be sure to visit the Copenhagen Blues Festival in September or the Copenhagen Culture Night in October.
Winter in Denmark
Winter is the best time to travel to Denmark if you are looking for the famous Scandinavian “hygge” that cannot be experienced anywhere else. The temperatures are certainly chilly, but it’s the ideal time to experience the country’s cozy Christmas traditions or stroll through the local markets. Daylight is minimal during these months, as the sun doesn’t rise until 9 am and sets very early, around 4 pm. The snows in Denmark are quite short-lived, contrary to popular belief.
Tivoli Christmas runs from mid-November to the end of December. This is the most important Christmas market in the country, where you can find a wonderful selection of crafts, traditional food, mulled wine and æbleskivers. Both in winter and summer, there are many jazz festivals, such as Vinterjazz.
