Victoria Falls, One of the World’s Greatest Natural Wonders

A Natural Wonder in the Heart of Africa

Victoria Falls, straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, is one of the most awe-inspiring sights on Earth. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders”, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered one of the 7 natural wonders of the world thanks to its incredible size, power, and scenic beauty. Twice the height and width of Niagara Falls, Victoria Falls is a destination that offers unforgettable experiences for thrill-seekers, nature lovers, and cultural explorers alike.

Where Is Victoria Falls and How Big Is It?

Victoria Falls is located about halfway along the Zambezi River, the fourth-longest river in Africa. It stretches 5,604 feet across and plunges as far as 354 feet, making it the world’s largest curtain of falling water. This enormous wall of water is divided into five separate waterfalls: Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and the Eastern Cataract.

The mist can rise more than 1,300 feet into the air and can be seen from 30 miles away. During the peak water flow (April–May), the roar of the falls is audible from up to 25 miles out.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls?

The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience:

  • High Water Season (Feb–May): This is when the falls are at their most powerful. Expect incredible spray and thundering water—but also heavy mist that can limit visibility from up close. Great time for helicopter flights.

  • Low Water Season (Aug–Dec): The Zambian side may dry up during this time, but it’s perfect for visiting Devil’s Pool and going white-water rafting. Views from the Zimbabwe side remain impressive and much clearer.

  • Shoulder Seasons (Jun–Jul & Jan): Offer a good mix of activities and water flow, plus cooler weather.

Month-by-Month Tip: If you’re hoping to swim in Devil’s Pool, plan your trip between mid-August and mid-January, when the water is low enough for safe access.

  • Currency: Zimbabwe uses US dollars. Zambia uses Zambian Kwacha, though USD is accepted in tourist areas.

  • Health: Bring insect repellent and consult your doctor about malaria pills.

  • Packing: Include waterproof clothing, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and layers for cool nights.

  • Safety: Avoid swimming near the falls, secure valuables, and beware of curious baboons!

Cultural Experiences & Ethical Tourism

  • Visit Local Villages: Tours of Umuzi Homestead (Zimbabwe) or Mukuni Village (Zambia) offer cultural insights.

  • Eat Local: Try traditional dishes at Dusty Road Experience (Zimbabwe) or join a dinner cruise on the Zambezi.

  • Ethical Wildlife Tourism: Avoid elephant rides or interactions with captive wildlife. Choose game drives and reputable sanctuaries instead.

  • Support Local Artisans: Shop at curio markets and buy handmade crafts directly from artists.

Make the most of your trip by adding a safari package in the adventure:

  • Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe)
