The Galapagos Islands, whose official name is the Archipelago de Col&oacute;n, constitutes a province of Ecuador and is located 1000 km off the mainland coast, in the Pacific Ocean. The group are formed of a set of thirteen islands of volcanic origin and more than a hundred islets and rocky outcrops. It is the second largest archipelago in the world and with more volcanic activity than Hawaii. The Galapagos is a Natural World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. They are known to be the centre of the observations and studies of Darwin's for the development of his "Theory of Evolution".
 Its exotic landscapes do not resemble other islands of the Pacific, on the contrary, they are rather arid, with huge lava fields, rock formations, cactus forests and volcanic cones. And this is exactly where its exoticism lies, in its uninhabited and naked aspect that seems like it is from another time and from another planet. Under the sea, there are underground craters and coral reefs, where an extraordinary biological diversity is present. So much so they are also considered one of the seven underwater wonders of the world and one of the most fascinating places in the planet to perform deep sea diving.
 The Galapagos can be reached by air from Quito or Guayaquil. Only four of its islands are inhabited, the town of Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz Island is the main human settlement. Other minor settlements are Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Crist&oacute;bal, Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island and Puerto Velasco on Floreana Island. The lava beds of the Island of San Crist&oacute;bal are like "a petrified sea at the height of the storm", according to the famous naturalist. Its tourist points are Playa Ochoa, Puerto Grande, Le&oacute;n Dormido, Isla Lobos, Puerto Chino, Galapaguera from Cerro Colorado, El Progreso, the Interpretation Center, Cerro Tijeretas, Mann Beach, Punta Carola and La Lober&iacute;a.
 In Isabela, the largest island, you can see an identical landscape. On the way to the volcano Sierra Negra, the vegetation disappears little by little and the magma of recent times floods the horizon along with plenty of large cacti. The equatorial line crosses the north of the island.
 The main airport is on Baltra Island, whose most famous attraction is the 150-meter water channel that separates it from Santa Cruz Island and where sea lions, birds and endemic species live together. Bartolome Island has some of the most beautiful landscapes of the archipelago which consist of an extinct volcano 100 meters just off the coast of Santiago Island and a variety of volcanic formations in red, orange, green, black and bright. Pinnacle Rock and the twin bays, separated by an isthmus, are popular with travellers.
 In the Plaza Islands and the channel that separates the North Island from the South, the turquoise waters contrast with the black lava of the banks. Plaza South is one of the smallest in the Galapagos, but in spite of its size it is the richest of all and some of the most interesting and outstanding species of the archipelago live there. Seeing land iguanas, that often remain in the shade of the cactus, is guaranteed as well as swallow-tailed gulls who nest on the cliffs.
 Its geological past of almost 5 million years has given it a spectacular and unique landscape and has made it home to two thousand endemic species. This is one of the most exciting places for scientists and biologists due to its rich fauna and flora. 220 species of endemic plants have been counted, 399 natives and 119 introduced, transported by the wind, the sea, or the birds that emigrated from the continent. In the animal world, sea lions, dolphins, Darwin finches, cormorants, giant tortoises, land and marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, Galapagos penguins, frigates, seahorses, pelicans, blue-footed boobies and red-legged, albatross and whale and hammerhead sharks constitute the enormous diversity that lives in this exclusive environment.

Galapagos Islands

Guayaquil is the largest and most populated city in Ecuador and is located on the banks of the Guayas River, which flows to the Pacific Ocean through an estuary called "Estero Salado".
Right in the centre are the famous streets of Clemente Bail&eacute;n and Chimborazo, where the Seminario Park is located, in which huge and harmless iguanas roam wild. It houses an equestrian statue of Simon Bolivar and in front of the garden area is the Cathedral of Guayaquil, a beautiful neo-Gothic building rebuilt in stone after the great fire.
On the banks of the river, the 2.5 km long Malec&oacute;n Sim&oacute;n Bol&iacute;var, known as the Malec&oacute;n 2000, allows for peaceful river-side strolls. It is one of the most successful urban projects in America and an icon of the city. Guayaquil locals stroll along the promenade and it is also the departure point for boats that sail down the river to enjoy the local landscapes.
This urban park, full of nature, history, tradition, modernism and beauty, has many tourist attractions such as manicured gardens, artificial lagoons, fountains, viewpoints, quays, squares, museums, cinemas, shopping centers, restaurants, bars, food courts, play areas and historical monuments such as the Hemiciclo de La Rotonda, a monument that commemorates the meeting between Sim&oacute;n Bol&iacute;var and Jos&eacute; de San Mart&iacute;n; a Clock Tower, 30 meters high, which an octagonal base and a huge Byzantine-style dome that is one of the most famous and photographed buildings in the city; the Palacio de Cristal, a convention and exhibition center located in the Plaza de la Integraci&oacute;n, the Obelisk to the Glorious Aurora and the statue of the politician Olmedo.
A few meters from the Malec&oacute;n 2000 and on the banks of the river on a hill, is the emblematic historic district of Cerro de Santa Ana, a very special neighbourhood with a colonial appearance, narrow cobblestone streets and wooden houses of different colours. Behind the statue of the founder Francisco de Orellana, there are 444 steps that connect the base of the hill with the top in a route that concentrates a variety of restaurants, cafes, art galleries and craft shops. Above you get one of the best views of the city and you can visit the Lighthouse, the Chapel of the Virgin of Mercy and the Naval Museum. At the foot of the hill, Las Pe&ntilde;as neighbourhood is the most iconic of Guayaquil, where we can appreciate the colonial air in its old, elegant and colourful wooden houses with French-style balconies. In its most emblematic street, the narrow paved road Numa Pompilio Llona, art galleries and live music venues permeate the place with a captivating bohemian air. Next to Las Pe&ntilde;as is Puerto Santa Ana with its own Malecon and modern commercial and office buildings.

Guayaquil

Ever wanted to stand with one foot in each hemisphere? The Middle of the World Monument in Ecuador grants you that wish. As the name suggests, the monument stands on the equator, the line which divides the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres. Only 19 miles north of the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, it is a must-visit attraction if you travel to Ecuador.
The Middle of the World Monument measures 30 metres in height and a line runs from its centre down to a central square, where visitors can stand with one foot in each hemisphere. Although the monument was constructed between 1979 and 1982, on the site where a French explorer calculated the equatorial line in 1736, later technologies have revealed the true equator to be a few hundred metres north of the monument.&nbsp;
Nevertheless, only geography purists would worry about these minor details as it&rsquo;s still a fun landmark to visit on a&nbsp;tour of Ecuador&nbsp;where you can take photos and enjoy the panoramic views from the viewing platform at the top of the monument.&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Things to do at the Middle of the World Monument</h2>
Of course, the best thing to do at the Middle of the World Monument is to straddle the equatorial line and take a few memorable photos. Another highlight is to ride the elevator or climb the stairs to the top of the monument. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of untouched mountains and the snow-capped Andes for as far as the eye can see.&nbsp;
If you&rsquo;re interested in visiting the exact spot which marks the equatorial line, be sure to stop at the Inti&ntilde;an Solar Museum, which proudly advertises itself as the location of the &lsquo;true&rsquo; equator. This ethnographic museum is a celebration of Ecuadorian indigenous culture and has a number of interesting interactive exhibits. Visitors also have the opportunity to test the laws of physics, which are said to be affected by the location of the site on the equator, with a series of fascinating science experiments.&nbsp;

Middle of the World Monument

"Light of America&rdquo; is one of the names that have been assigned to Quito. The capital of the Republic of Ecuador was founded in the sixteenth century on an ancient Inca city. It has the largest and best preserved historic center in Latin America, enough reasons to be proclaimed the first Cultural Heritage Humanity Site in history along with Poland&rsquo;s Krakow.
 Quito is full of churches, monasteries, colonial buildings, squares, convents, museums, theaters and narrow, steep cobbled streets. The Spanish influence has left dozens of temples in the old town, modest in their facades and immense inside for the materials and details. Three of them stand out considerably: the Church of San Francisco, the oldest, called the "Escorial of the New World" because of its size; The Company of Jesus, one of the most important baroque expressions of the continent whose interior is covered with sheets of gold leaf; and the Basilica del Voto Nacional, the largest neo-Gothic architecture on the continent, whose curious gargoyles not only represent mythological beings, but also endemic fauna.
 The neighbourhood of La Ronda is the most emblematic of Quito and in its main artery, Juan Dios Morales street known as La Ronda street, you can still breathe the bohemian, cultural and artistic air of yesteryear and listen to live music and taste the famous canelazos or delicious empanadas on sale in every restaurant. Another of the most important roads is that of the &lsquo;Six Crosses&rsquo;, which runs through the entire colonial area. Its name refers to the stone crosses that were placed in the atriums of each church as a popular altar.
 The Plaza Grande or Plaza de la Independencia houses the Palacio de Carondelet or Palace Presidential, the Municipal and Archbishop's Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral. In the middle of it and surrounded by gardens, stands the monument to Independence, a cry for freedom. The Plaza Foch in the neighborhood of La Mariscal, constitutes "the zone of farra" or the center of the entertainment and evening entertainment in Quito where you can enjoy "la pachanga" dancing in bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
 Quito is located at 2800 meters above sea level. At 3000 meters above sea level, on the hill of Panecillo, stands the sculpture of the Virgin of Quito, 30 meters high and built with 7400 pieces of aluminum. From its vantage point, you can get the best views of the city, both the old town and the modern area, as well as the suburban neighbourhoods that climb the slopes of the mountains that surround the city. Thus, delimiting the city is the Casitagua volcano to the north, the Falla de Quito to the east, the eastern slopes of the Pichincha, belonging to the Cordillera de los Andes, to the west and the Atacazo volcano to the south.
 Another attraction of the city is the cable car, which climbs from 2950 meters to 4053 meters in just 10 minutes to the slopes of Pichincha from whose natural terrace the viewer can be captivated.
 The surrounding parks are an important part of the urban life of the locals, who come on weekends as a family to enjoy the endemic wildlife. Popular parks include Itchimb&iacute;a, Gu&aacute;pulo, Metropolitano, El Ejido and La Carolina.

Colca Canyon in Peru is one of the essential sights if you're going to visit the country. The canyon is about 3,400 metres deep and is one of the largest canyons in the world and the third most visited in Peru.
But the valley contains much more than just the canyon. No wonder, since it's located in the middle of the Andes and surrounded by volcanoes. In fact, some of them are still active. Here are some activities we can recommend. Bear in mind that it's a safe place and while it attracts many travellers, if you leave the most popular parts you can enjoy it in solitude.
<h2>Salinas and Agua Blanca Reserve</h2>
To visit the Colca Canyon you must pass through the Salinas Reserve, where you can see alpacas, llamas and vicu&ntilde;as in the wild. Quite a spectacle, before you even reach your destination. The road that crosses it, with its immense landscapes devoid of people, is an attraction in itself.&nbsp;
Remember that, during the whole visit to the Colca Canyon you will be over 3,000 metres above sea level, and in some cases more than 4,000 metres. Take the necessary precautions against altitude sickness.&nbsp;
<h2>Look-out point of the Andes or Look-out point of the Patapampa Volcanoes</h2>
The mummy Juanita was found in one of the many volcanoes that can be seen from this look-out point, named Pichu Pichu. The views are spectacular, but don't use all your memory cards here, because you have a lot to see. For example, the terrace of totems, which are actually small piles of rounded pebbles with religious significance for the Incas. You can leave your own stone if you wish.
A little reminder: the look-out point is 5,000 metres above sea level, which means that, even if the sun's shining, it'll be cold. Go prepared.
<h2>The town of Chivay</h2>
To visit the Colca Canyon you must stop in Chivay, the most important town in the area and the last "civilised" settlement you will find. Use the cash points if you need to and buy some bottled water just in case.&nbsp;
Despite its location, Chivay has unusual attractions, such as a planetarium, the main square and some hot springs.
<h2>The lagoon of three colours</h2>
This lake gets its name from the effect that light has on its surface. The colour that you see depends on the time of day you visit. Atmospheric factors, such as temperature and the wind, also influence its hue.&nbsp;
<h2>La Calera hot springs</h2>
Remember that the Colca Canyon is a volcanic area. That's why there are many hot springs. The most visited ones are those of La Calera, about three kilometres from Chivay, so you can get there on foot. What you'll find are natural pools at different temperatures. A unique accompaniment to your visit are the incredible views of the valley.
<h2>Uyo Uyo, a pause for archaeology</h2>
Near the town of Yanque, where there is a display of traditional dances every morning, is the Uyo Uyo archaeological site. If you like hiking, you'll get there without any problem, even though the walk is uphill. The view of the canyon from above is fantastic.
At the site you'll see the layout of the ancient streets of a city that fell into the hands of the Incas and, if you go a little further, there is a beautiful waterfall.
<h2>The village of Maca</h2>
This is a village of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants notable for the church of Santa Ana, whose interior of mirrors and gold is especially picturesque. In addition, there's a small market held every day where you can taste the inner part of the cactus.&nbsp;
<h2>The geyser at Pinchollo</h2>
Pinchollo is one of the least visited villages in the Colca Canyon, but it's one you will not want to miss. There's an active geyser nearby and you can take a closer look at the Hualca Hualca volcano.
<h2>Visit Colca Canyon to see the flight of the condor</h2>
The Cruz del Condor look-out point is the jewel in the crown of the Colca Canyon. Not only because the views of the valley are spectacular, but because it's common to see the flight of condors from here. The Andean Condor, which has inspired songs such as El Condor Pasa, is the largest flying animal in the world. It can reach a weight of 15 kilos and a wingspan of up to 230 cm.&nbsp;
It is best to arrive early in the morning to avoid hordes of tourists. And remember that although condors often make an appearance, they're wild animals, so their presence is not guaranteed.

Colca Canyon

Ancient Incan capital conquered by Pizarro, Cusco today is an active city of colonial buildings surrounded by reminders of this splendid civilisation. For example, the Santo Domingo cathedral is built on the stone of the Incan Casas del Sol, some of the walls are even still visible. This is the classic departure point for trips to Machu Picchu.
<h2>What to see in Cuzco</h2>
You may be passing through Cuzco because you want to see Machu Pichu. However, at Exoticca we recommend that you pay attention to the city as well. This is a place with a wealth of history and great beauty. There is a reason it was the capital of the Inca Empire and a strategic hub during the Spanish colonial period. The combination of both cultures is a feature that will provide a constant source of delight.
<h3>Travel to Cuzco and discover its heart: Plaza de Armas</h3>
When you see the Plaza de Armas for the first time, it won't occur to you that it was originally a swamp. The Incas installed drainage, dried it out and made it their administrative centre. The Spanish colonisers built their churches and buildings on top of former palaces and today it is a place to have coffee.
The Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus are outstanding places to visit. The latter was built in a beautiful baroque style and houses a golden pulpit and four cedar altars.
<h3>San Blas district</h3>
The city's oldest church is the one that gives its name to one of its most charming districts. San Blas is a place to lose yourself amid steep cobbled streets full of interesting nooks and crannies. Don't miss the colonial-era buildings and take advantage of the walk to buy your Cuzco souvenirs here. If possible, in one of the craft workshops. When you reach the highest part of the district you'll be able to soak up one of the city's most beautiful views. And, if it gets late and you are in San Blas after dark, take advantage and have a pisco sour cocktail.
<h3>Calle Loreto and the twelve-angled stone</h3>
Calle Loreto is one of those places where the contrast between the pre-Columbian Inca culture and the colonial culture is best appreciated. The lower sections of the buildings consist of walls of Inca origin, yet they support buildings of colonial architecture.
The best known place in Cuzco meanwhile is the twelve-angled stone, very near Calle Loreto. You'll find it in Calle Hatun. This stone is remarkable for its workmanship.
<h3>San Pedro Market</h3>
The developer of the most famous structure in Paris, the Eiffel Tower, also built the Mercado de San Pedro, or Central Market of Cuzco. Inside, you can buy Peruvian food and local handicrafts. We recommend that you try the fruit: it's absolutely delicious.&nbsp;
<h3>The temple of Qorikancha&nbsp;</h3>
The temple of Qorikancha is an Inca construction dedicated to the sun god, and at one time it was the most important place of worship of the Inca civilization. Its enormous blocks of rock, which are joined together without the use of mortar, have been preserved. In the past, they formed walls covered with sheets of gold that marked the limits of the enclosures of the various buildings of the complex, since the temple of Qorikancha was not a single building, but a real religious complex that housed the temple of the stars, the moon and, of course, the sun.
<h3>Sacsayhuam&aacute;n</h3>
To reach the ruins of the Sacsayhuam&aacute;n fortress, one must walk about forty minutes to the north of the city. It's well worth the walk. In fact, it would be unforgivable to travel to Cuzco and not visit this complex, which dates back to the 15th century, when Pachacutec commissioned its construction. The three superimposed platforms, made up of gigantic blocks of stones similar to those of Qorikancha, have been preserved to this day. They exhibit images carved by the Incas
Don't miss the Sun Gate.
<h3>Tambomachay, Pukapukara, Qenqo and the White Christ</h3>
No list of archaeological sites would be complete without mentioning Tambomachay, Pukapukara and Qenqo. All three of them would be more than enough reason to travel to Cuzco on their own, but we recommend that you don't miss a single one.
Tambomachay, which lies 8 km from the city, is a place where water was worshipped. There is a complex system of aqueducts and canals here.&nbsp;Pukapukara is only a five-minute walk from Tambomachay. It is known as the Red Fortress, and you can still see the remains of the walls and inner quarters.&nbsp;Qenqo is further away. It contains the remains of a religious complex with the ruins of an amphitheatre, an underground hall, a canal and two religious columns.
The White Christ is an 8-metre-high statue near Qenqo. From here you can walk to the centre of Cuzco on a descending walk that will reveal beautiful views of the city.
Our recommendation is that you do the whole route on foot so that you can appreciate the surrounding landscape, but you can also take a bus or combi.

Cusco

The world&rsquo;s highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, situated in the Andes, straddles the border between Bolivia and Peru. Andean tradition dictates that Lake Titicaca is the birthplace of the sun and contemplating its bright, reflective waters, it&rsquo;s easy to understand how the lake has acquired such a mystical legacy. The most famous inhabitants of the lake were, of course, the Incas, but Andean communities have always been drawn to this magical place, including the ancient Tiwanaku people, whose presence on the lake dates back over 1000 years, as well as the Quechuas, Aymaras and Uros people, to name only a few.
Owing to the diverse communities that have settled here over the centuries, a trip to Lake Titicaca is a cultural experience like no other, and an unmissable highlight of any holiday to Peru. The lake is famed for its floating islands, constructed by the Uros people with thick, buoyant reeds which grow around the banks of Titicaca. A number of natural islands are also found, dotted throughout the lake, such as Taquile, Amantani and the Bolivian islands of Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna. The city of Puno, on the western shores of Lake Titicaca, is a major centre of Peruvian culture and the starting point for most trips to Lake Titicaca. When it comes to Peru&rsquo;s top sights, Lake Titicaca is on par with Machu Picchu and is invaluable for the insights it allows travellers to gain into Inca heritage and a rich mixture of Andean cultures.

<h2>What to see in Lake Titicaca</h2>
If you travel to Lake Titicaca, you&rsquo;ll likely want to explore its varied islands and discover the different cultures of its indigenous communities. Taquile Island is the one of the most popular islands on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca and is protected by UNESCO for its cultural heritage. This hilly island is home to the Taquile people, Quecha-speaking people with a rich traditional culture. Both Taquile men and women wear colourful, traditional dress and are famed for producing high-quality handicrafts. Knitted, weaved and yarned textiles in a rainbow palette of colours are sold by the locals who have embraced the increased tourism to Lake Titicaca in recent years, offering homestays and guided tours to the islands pre-Inca ruins.
Aside from Taquile Island, visiting the floating islands is the most popular thing to do in Lake Titicaca. These small man-made islands, composed of buoyant reeds, are a fascinating sight and reveal much about the history of the Uros people in Peru. There are around 42 islands in total, and approximately 100 locals live there full time in their floating homes, which can be moved around the lake, historically to protect themselves from any threats that could arise on the shoreline. One of the Uros Islands even has a post office, allowing visitors to send a postcard from the only floating post office in the world!
Another unique thing to do in Lake Titicaca is to take a cruise in one of the Uros Totora Reed Boats, magnificent constructions and the traditional mode of transport of the Uros people. Finally, a holiday to Lake Titicaca would be incomplete without taking some time to explore Puno, nestled between the shores of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Puno is a major hub for indigenous culture and it&rsquo;s where most visitors to Lake Titicaca choose to spend the night. It&rsquo;s worth exploring it&rsquo;s elegant plazas or getting stuck into the local folklore traditions during the rambunctious Feast of Virgen del la Candelaria celebrations. The views of Lake Titicaca from Puno are equally as soul-stirring.&nbsp;

Lake Titicaca

Founded by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro, Plaza Mayor and the surrounding old town retain their colonial feeling. In this square you will find the cathedral, one of the most fascinating examples of baroque architecture in America and home to Pizarro&rsquo;s tomb. Nowadays, the home town of Nobel prize winner Nobel Mario Vargas Llosa has positioned itself firmly as the gastronomical mecca of Latin America.
<h2>What to see in Lima&nbsp;</h2>
There are many charming places and monuments in the capital of Peru that you might not have expected to find here. Walking around its streets, visiting its churches and tasting its food are just three of the things you can do if you decide to visit Lima.&nbsp;
<h3>Main square or Plaza de Armas</h3>
If you've decided to travel to Lima, you mustn't miss its nerve centre: Plaza de Armas. This is one of the most photographed sightseeing places in the city. Here you'll find the archbishop's palace, the government palace and the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro. Some of these buildings are open to visitors, but if you don't feel like going in, don't worry: just seeing the beauty of their facades is rewarding in its own right.&nbsp;
<h3>Lima Cathedral</h3>
Religious tourism is not a major feature of Peru, but Lima Cathedral is an exception. The building combines different architectural styles. Thus, the fa&ccedil;ade is a clear representation of the Renaissance style with plateresque additions that merge into a clear neoclassical style when it comes to the towers.
You shouldn't miss the representation of the star-filled sky in the interior.&nbsp;
<h3>Government Palace</h3>
The Government palace has become a reason to travel to Lima in its own right. It is located in the Plaza de Armas and its neo-baroque facade will immediately attract your attention. Make sure this does not distract you from the side fa&ccedil;ade, decorated in neo-colonial style and also demanding admiration. Although this palace is now the seat of the Peruvian government, it harbours much more history. Eminent figures such as Francisco Pizarro dwelt within its walls. As well as several presidents of Peru.
<h3>Municipal Theatre of Lima</h3>
If you're looking for a really old and impressive building, head for the theatre in Lima. It was built in 1915, but it was razed to the ground in a fire in 1998. Its restoration in 2008 included upgrades, while respecting its original style. Today it is in full use and is part of the active cultural life of Lima.
<h3>San Francisco Monastery</h3>
You are surely aware of the catacombs of Paris, but did you know that there are also catacombs under the Monastery of San Francisco in Lima? They form part of the country's historical heritage and it is estimated that they are home to the remains of more than twenty thousand people. When you visit them, you'll be surprised by the state of conservation of the place. Contrary to what you may expect, it is not at all sinister but rather a place of contemplation.
On the surface you'll find a monumental complex that includes a basilica, a convent and two other buildings of religious character: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Solitude and the Church of the Miracle. This is one of the most majestic and yet charming spots in Lima.&nbsp;
<h3>Malec&oacute;n de Miraflores: spectacular views</h3>
You'll find the Malec&oacute;n esplanade towards the end of the Miraflores district. A perfect walk to get to know this beautiful city. As you proceed you'll discover various parks and gardens where you can enjoy the perfect climate and the tranquillity of a city that lives in close contact with the sea.&nbsp;
And if the walk is beautiful, the five kilometres of the Malec&oacute;n are just as good. Do the walk and you'll reach the cliffs of the Costa Verde and their incomparable views.
<h3>The Park of Love</h3>
Among the great range of parks and gardens in Lima, the Parque del Amor, or Park of Love, is notable for housing Victor Delfin's famous sculpture "The Kiss". It shows a couple kissing passionately on a platform facing the sea. Visiting Lima can be a bit overwhelming, so stop in the shade of its trees and catch your breath before continuing.
<h3>Larcomar, the first pit stop</h3>
Not everything involves fresh air and parks in Lima. The city also has popular shopping malls, such as the Larcomar Shopping Centre. It's the perfect place to get your strength back with a "Pisco Sour", or a typical Peruvian ceviche. But be prepared to spend your time here in the company of crowds. Larcomar is not only big, but also very popular.
<h3>Huaca Pucllana&nbsp;</h3>
Travelling to Lima and missing the archaeological centre of Huaca Pucllana would be unforgivable.
Note its truncated pyramid and the many adjoining courtyards and buildings. The entire complex was built in adobe and filled in with pebbles. The visit is very interesting and instructive, thanks to the restoration work that began in the 1980s and continues to this day.&nbsp;

Lima is, as we have already mentioned, a city that lives in contact with the sea. Its beaches and its malecones prove it. Lima

An ancient Incan citadel and top of most travellers bucket-list, Machu Picchu is an awe-inspiring sight and a must-see for all intrepid travellers. Perched at 2,430 metres in the eastern mountains of Peru, Macchu Picchu has enchanted all who have made the journey to see its ancient ruins since its rediscovery in 1911.&nbsp;
Constructed in a classical Inca style the monument is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major attraction for all who choose to <a title="travel to Peru" href="https://www.exoticca.co.uk/america/south-america/peru" target="_blank" rel="noopener">travel to Peru</a>. Alternatively, the most intrepid travellers might opt to trek the Inca Trail. Machu Picchu is one of the most popular destinations for travellers on a trip to Peru, although many visitors know little about the history and significance of this ancient monument. Arenal

Known as the lungs of San Jos&eacute;, Braulio Carrillo National Park is one of the parks found in the Central Volcanic Conservation Area, the second biosphere reserve in Costa Rica. This is in the Bellavista Fortress and it has a huge collection of objects belonging to the pre-Columbian era, but there is also religious art and pieces from the colonial period.

Most visitors come to Costa Rica for its nature, its fauna and its incredible landscapes. If you visit San Jos&eacute; you will be able to see a small sample of all this in the Spirogyra butterfly garden. It has more than 30 species of butterflies and various types of hummingbirds.&nbsp;

Tortuguero National Park is one of the most important destinations in Costa Rica and one of the most visited, so set aside a couple of days in your itinerary to see it. You can get there by boat from San Jos&eacute; itself and enjoy the exuberant Costa Rican landscape.&nbsp;

San José

This small fishing town is located within Santa Cruz, in Guanacaste province. Whilst it still preserves its natural charm, in recent years it has also become an important tourist destination. Its main attraction are its beaches, such as Grande, Langosta and Ventanas, as well as water sports like surfing, not to mention watching turtle breeding, an interesting annual attraction on the coasts of Costa Rica.

Tamarindo

Situated on the eastern coast of Costa Rica, this national park is the most important breeding area for the Green Sea Turtle in the Caribbean. The area can only be reached by boat or plane, as the area is protected by an imposing jungle wall, meaning that simply arriving to this place is an adventure. <h3>Tiananmen Square and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong</h3>
Tiananmen Square is very close to the Forbidden City where you can find some of the most iconic places in the city, such as the National Museum of China, the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. You're bound to find long queues to see the embalmed body and to get in you'll have to leave cameras and backpacks in storage.&nbsp;
<h3>Beihai Park</h3>
Beihai Park is as beautiful as it is huge. If you have time, go to the White Dagoba, which you can find on the island in the middle of the lake. It was built for the Dalai Lama's visit to the city in 1651. The park is also home to several Buddhist temples.
<h3>Jingshan Park or Emperor's Hill</h3>
Travelling to Beijing and losing yourself in its streets is a wonderful experience, but if you want to see it from a vantage point to get a panoramic view, go to Emperor's Hill. It was created using the earth that was excavated when the moat of the Forbidden City was built, and now offers incredible views of the city. The best, in fact.&nbsp;

<h2>The Hutongs: an experience unique to Beijing</h2>
Most of these old and narrow alleys were demolished to build the stadiums that hosted the 2008 Olympic Games. However, some can still be visited. Do it on foot or hire a rickshaw. The most authentic ones are next to the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower.&nbsp;

<h2>The Forbidden City, a must if you decide to travel to Beijing</h2>
24 Chinese emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties ruled the country from this fabulous complex, which includes not only the imperial palace, but also the buildings used to house the entire court.&nbsp;
The visit to the complex, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, lasts a minimum of two hours. You can see the emperor's private rooms and the Hall of Supreme Harmony, among other things.

<h2>Summer Palace and Lake Kunming</h2>
During the summer, the emperors would leave the Forbidden City and spend the hottest months in the Summer Palace, at a location largely occupied by Lake Kunming. Its waters keep the complex cool; here you can see the Garden of Virtue and Harmony, the Tower of Buddhist Incense, the 17-Arch Bridge, the Long Corridor and the Stone Boat. Reserve an entire morning or afternoon for this visit.

Only 5 kilometres northwest of the Summer Palace are the ruins of a former residence. Its gardens were built in the 17th century and you will see its clear European influence. The English invasion did considerable damage to the palace, but it's still well worth a visit.&nbsp;

<h2>The Temple of Heaven</h2>
You can't travel to Beijing without visiting one of its most sacred places: The Temple of Heaven. It was built during the Ming Dynasty as an offering to the heavens, in gratitude for abundant harvests and also to ask for good harvests in the future. Chinese temple names are very descriptive. In the Temple of Heaven you will find the Hall of Abstinence and the Imperial Vault of Heaven. Don't be surprised if you find people practising tai chi in its gardens.&nbsp;

<h2>Travelling to Beijing and shopping in Wangfujing</h2>
Beijing is well known for its markets and shopping malls. If you're looking for deals and bargains, this is your city; and the most commercial area is Wangfujing, right in the centre. You'll find shopping malls, department stores and many souvenir shops here. Don't miss the nocturnal market to savour the strange cuisine based on spiders and snakes served on skewers.&nbsp;
And if you're going to Beijing to do some haggling, go to the Silk Market. Here you'll find more than 1,700 stalls offering crafts and silks. Watch out for fakes!

<h2>Yonghe Temple or Lama Temple</h2>
If you've decided to travel to Beijing to see its finest temples, you mustn't miss Yonghe Temple. It's the most important Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. It dates from the seventeenth century and in its time served as a spiritual refuge for the lamas. You'll recognise it by its golden roofs and the carving, from a single piece of wood, of the Maitreya Buddha.

The rice terraces cut across the green landscape with white lines that seem to be painted on, resulting in an utterly peculiar landscape.&nbsp;

The landscape of this area would not be possible without the role played by its system of lakes and rivers, many of which are navigable. <h2>Chinese gastronomy and culture in Guilin</h2>
Rice noodles are the one traditional dish par excellence that you mustn't miss if you decide to travel to Guilin. They're eaten at all times there, whether at breakfast, lunch or dinner. You'll find them on every corner of the city and they are very affordable.&nbsp;
If, in addition to visiting the area, you want to learn some of the many Chinese artistic disciplines, you can sign up for a calligraphy, tai chi or cooking class. You won't become an expert with just one class, but the experience is well worthwhile. You can also make oil tea, learn to embroider in the traditional way or do your bit to help and, indeed, work in the fields. All these possibilities will bring you a little closer to the local culture and enrich your trip.

Guilin

Most visitors choose the comfortable boat trip on this river from the Zhujiang delta to the port of Yangshuo. This is just the extreme northern part of a landscape which extends for hundreds of square kilometres.

Li River

Shanghai&rsquo;s appeal stretches across generations, from the glamour and glitz of the 1920s, the city&rsquo;s &lsquo;Golden Age&rsquo;, typified in the Art Deco architecture of the Bund, to the ultra-modern skyscrapers of Pudong, Shanghai&rsquo;s high-tech hub. As the nation&rsquo;s most developed and largest city, no tour of China is complete without a visit to Shanghai to contemplate its eclectic buildings, diverse neighbourhoods and &lsquo;anything is possible&rsquo; atmosphere.
Carved in two by the Huangpu River, Shanghai oozes cosmopolitan elegance. Most of the city&rsquo;s historic districts and top sights lie on the west bank of the river, in the areas known as Puxi. Here, you can shop till you drop in the leafy avenues of the French Concession, dubbed the &lsquo;Paris of the East&rsquo;, or soak up the charms of old Shanghai in Huangpu and the Old City, where traditional wooden architecture and teahouses promise to transport you back in time.
Aside from its financial centre and reputation as a shopping paradise, one thing that Shanhai stands out for is its amazing food scene. Bako National Park

This Hindu shrine is one of the most popular Hindu sites outside of India. It is located on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur and takes the name of the river and the village located nearby. The most striking part of the temple is its exterior, presided over by a huge golden statue of representing Murugan, the god of war to which the caves are consecrated. Before climbing the numerous steps there are also several temples with paintings and sculptures typical of Hinduism to enjoy. At the top is where the cave of the Cathedral is located, a cavity of 100 meters high where the main sanctuary is located. Inside you can see an altar, several figures characteristic of this religion, as well as offerings that believers have given to the Gods. A good time to visit is during the Thaipusam festival, in January or February, when the victory of good over evil is celebrated and Murugan receives flowers and offerings.

The capital of Malaysia is a city of contrasts. In is a melting-pot of different communities such as Indians, Chinese and Malays, as well as other immigrant nationalities who arrived in Kuala Lumpur after industrialization. The icon of the city, which stands out from the rest of the buildings, are the Petronas towers, which once were the highest in the world and from where the best views are obtained. A few meters away is another of the most visited viewpoints. It is the Menara Kuala Lumpur, a communications tower whose base is an activity center for children. Both buildings are located in Gran Jalan Ampang, the district where most of the large hotel chains, restaurants and stores are concentrated. Malaysia was a colony of Great Britain until 1957, the day in which the great square of Dataran Merdeka replaced the Anglo-Saxon flag with that of the country as a symbol of independence. There are simply so many things to see in the Sacred Valley, it can be hard to get your head around planning an itinerary. A standard ticket is valid for 10 consecutive days. If you choose an organised tour of the Sacred Valley, this will probably be taken care of for you, but nevertheless, it&rsquo;s good to know some of the top sights in the Sacred Valley in order to plan out your trip to Peru.
Standing above the Urubamba River, on top of a mountain are the magnificent Pisac Ruins. A 2-hour hiking trail links the ruins with the colonial town of Pisac, and although the hike may be a little gruelling at this altitude, you&rsquo;ll be greatly rewarded by a well-preserved selection of Inca ruins which easily compete with Machu Picchu in terms of size and complexity. Probably built as a defence system, the sweeping stone terraces, buildings and circular look-outs will take your breath away, as well as the staggering views across the Sacred Valley. Even higher in altitude than Cuzco lies the charming little town of Chinchero, home to Inca architecture and a lively local market. Chinchero is well-known as a centre of Peruvian textiles.
The local weaving centre offers demonstrations and workshops to visitors, who can purchase the finished articles at bargain prices. The Salt Mines of Maras are perhaps the Sacred Valley&rsquo;s most curious attraction. These salt mines, in use since pre-Inca times, are an ingenious invention, as well as being incredibly photogenic. Families in the local communities are each assigned one of the salt ponds and harvest salt once the sun has evaporated the spring water from the pond. You can even purchase Maras salt in the local souvenir shops! A fortress, terraces and plaza, dating back to Inca times, can also be found in Ollantaytambo. Finally, a tour of the Sacred Valley would be incomplete without visiting Pisac Market, the best place in the valley to experience vibrant Quechua culture. This clay village is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Morocco. It is an ancient Kasbah, a walled Berber city designed to defend its surroundings: houses, farms and palm groves from potential invasion. Although there are many Kasbahs in Morocco, this is one of the best preserved examples. It is recognised as a World Heritage site and has been the setting of films such as Gladiator, The Mummy and Alexander the Great. Indeed, the region of Ouarzazate is known as the Moroccan Hollywood. Ait Benhaddou

The Dad&egrave;s Gorges are impressive rocky canyons situated north of the city of Tinghir. Their landscape, one of the top attractions in the country, boasts enormous rock faces which are the perdition of climbers, especially Spanish and French. The popularity of this sport has spurred several climbing schools which will initiate climbing novices. Its path, complete with palm groves, farm lands and mud villages attracts a great many tourists. The rivers crystal fresh water is perfect to cool off on the hottest days in summer. Dadès Gorges

Known for the Dad&egrave;s Gorges,, considered by some to be even more spectacular than those of Todra, this valley is characterised by its varied landscapes, its architectural richness and beautiful setting. From the top of the gorges, the vegetation is completely different to that below. The climate is cooler, so date trees cannot survive, and its main attraction is the fact that you can see the snow on the highest mountains from its sides. Its wild landscape is complemented by the streams, cliffs, canyons and the presence of the Kasbahs, large fortified constructions. During the journey you can see fields growing wheat, fruits, nuts, birch and almond trees. The Dad&egrave;s Valley is one of the natural wonders of the centre of Morocco.

Dadès Valley

The second largest city in Morocco, Fez, located in the north of the country, exudes a historic charm thanks to its long history and well-preserved old town. Founded between the 8th and 9th century under the Idrisid dynasty, the city of Fez was considered one of the most important cities in Islamic civilisation, which is still evident today in its many prestigious religious buildings and monuments. Located in Western Morocco, Marrakesh is a former imperial city, sat in the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Arabic and French are the spoken languages in the city, the latter of which is a remnant of the French Protectorate in Morocco in the early 20th-century.
A trip to Marrakesh can feel like a whirlwind for the senses, as you venture through the busy souks, contend with the amazing volume of traffic, comprised largely of both motorbikes and donkeys, and take in the vibrant atmosphere. Marrakesh dates back to the Berber Empire and has been inhabited by Berbers since Neolithic times, but the city was officially founded in the 11th-century by the Almoravid Dynasty. It was in this period that the old city walls and various buildings inside were constructed in red sandstone, which has given the city its recognisable appearance and nickname. Marrakesh grew rapidly and established itself as the cultural, religious, and trading centre of Northwest Africa. The golden years of the Saadian Dynasty saw the establishment of many elaborate palaces and monuments in the city, such as the Badi Palace and the wealthy sultans are buried in the richly embellished Saadian Tombs, a major attraction for visitors on a tour of Marrakesh.

Many visitors who travel to Marrakesh are excited to explore the labyrinthine Medina souks, an unmissable experience for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the local culture. From shops selling clothes and handbags to the more authentic spice sellers and the &lsquo;black magic&rsquo; souk, selling weird and wonderful mixtures and potions, the souks of Marrakesh are out of this world.
It is almost impossible to avoid getting a little lost, as the winding alleyways often seem to lead you back to where you started, as you pass by artisans working with metal or weaving baskets and busy food sellers providing hearty lunches for long ques of local shop owners. Except for a small number of tourist-centric shops, bartering is to be expected when you attempt to buy an item, so you can often secure great bargains whilst shopping in the souks.
Outside of the walled Medina, lies the new town, known as Gueliz, and it is here that you can find the popular Jardin Majorelle, perhaps one of Marrakesh&rsquo;s most photographed locations! Situated next to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, and with the option to buy a combined ticket to both, the Jardin Majorelle is a shady oasis amidst the flamboyant chaos of the city. These gardens belonged to the famous artist Jacques Majorelle and are a tropical paradise of exotic plants, a shady bamboo lined walkway and numerous water features and fountains. The centrepiece of the garden is the iconic electric blue building, which houses the Berber Museum, filled with artefacts and jewellery. Those looking to spend a day in tranquil surroundings during a trip to Marrakesh would be wise to choose a visit to these fabulous gardens.
The most characteristic structure of Marrakesh&rsquo;s skyline is undoubtedly the Koutoubia Mosque, its minaret stretching 77 metres into the sky, making it the tallest building in the Medina, as building above this height it outlawed in order to retain the prominence of the mosque. Built in the 12th-century, the Koutoubia stands out for the intricate blue tiling of its minaret and the gilded copper balls of its spire. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, they can admire it from the lush gardens that surround the building and hear the live call of prayer which sounds at regular intervals from its minaret.
A tour of Marrakesh would not be complete without visiting the majestic Bahia Palace, another of the city&rsquo;s most picturesque sights, renowned for its colourful tiling and decorated rooms. This 19th-century palace complex was built for the Grand Vizier of the Sultan, who used it as his residence and for entertaining Moroccan nobility. The gardens and palace buildings perfectly capture the essence of both Islamic and Moroccan style, with decorative wood-carved bas reliefs, mosaic work and decorative columns. Marrakesh

Nestled at the edge of the towering sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, Merzouga is the gateway to the Sahara Desert in Morocco. This small village, in the shadow of orange-hued dunes, is easily reached by road in a day or two from either Fez or Marrakech and has seen a steady increase in tourism in recent years as more and more people make the journey to experience the tranquillity of the desert for themselves.&nbsp;
Nevertheless, it&rsquo;s retained much of its charm and visitors who travel to Merzouga can enjoy the mix of Arab and Berber culture and countless desert experiences out in the dunes of the Sahara.&nbsp;
Things to do in Merzouga include camel trekking in the desert and gazing at the millions of twinkling stars in the clear desert sky at night. Most who visit Merzouga during their tour of Morocco opt to join camel trains, which travel deep into the desert, to spend the night at remote Berber camps and experience first-hand the life of this desert-dwelling culture. Set in a stunning location, nestled between the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, Ouarzazate is a Berber town and the first port of call for travellers wishing to head deeper into the deserts of Morocco or explore the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou. Ouarzazate has been an important trading centre for centuries and grew quickly during the years of French rule.&nbsp;
A stroll past its atmospheric Taourit Kasbah reveals its antique charms, but much of the appeal of a trip to Ouarzazate lies in its accessibility to the Sahara, making it an excellent base for a number of adventurous desert excursions. Camel trains into the desert leave from Ouarzazate, destined for magnificent journies to destinations as far-flung as Timbuktu in Mali. Since the French left in the 1950s, Ouarzazate has famously been used as a backdrop for a number of blockbuster movies and a visit to Atlas Studios will show you the settings of films such as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. Film-buffs can even explore the eerie abandoned set of the spooky Hills Have Eyes blockbuster, which is located close to the city and is complete with a spooky mock gas station.&nbsp;
Rather more tranquil things to see in Ouarzazate include a number of oases, such as the Flint Oasis, where tiny villages nestle amongst the uncharacteristically lush palm trees, and Skoura Oasis, known as the &lsquo;Oasis of 1000 Palms&rsquo;. There are countless accommodation options to choose from in Ouarzazate, as well as cafes and restaurants showcasing the best in Berber cuisine, although many who travel to Ouarzazate choose to join the camel treks into the desert to spend their nights under the blanket of stars in the Sahara instead. One of four imperial cities in Morocco, the fortified city of Rabat serves as both the country&rsquo;s capital and a popular beach destination, known for its long stretches of sandy Atlantic coastline. Rabat literally means &lsquo;fortified place&rsquo;, which is easily explainable with one look at the city&rsquo;s oldest part, the kasbah, which is encased within red walls. Rabat was once a thriving North African port, notoriously frequented by Barbary pirates from the 16th to 18th centuries, who were known for seizing ships in the western Mediterranean. 
The city&rsquo;s history and landmarks represent elements of both Islamic and French influence, owing to the French protectorate in Morocco during the first half of the 20th century. Majestic Rabat is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Medina, alongside affluent, modern neighbourhoods complete with skyscrapers and sleek architecture. With its privileged coastal location, Rabat is a popular holiday destination for both Moroccan&rsquo;s and foreigners alike. Long, sandy stretches of beach contrast against the imposing walls of the kasbah in the background, creating a unique cityscape.
Rabat also boasts a more laid-back atmosphere than a number of other popular Moroccan cities, with the winding streets of its medina largely unaffected by the impacts of tourism, so you can really appreciate the mix of history and modernity that the city has to offer. Thanks to its long history and strategic location, there is certainly enough sights to quench your thirst for culture on a tour of Rabat. &nbsp;The unmissable Hassan Tower is a good place to begin, as it stands out in the city&rsquo;s skyline, close to the banks of the Bou Regreg River. 
Its red sandstone minaret is part of an unfinished mosque, whose construction was abandoned in the 12th century, with the death of its commissioner Abu Yusef Yaqub al-Mansur of the Almohad Caliphate. Once finished, the mosque was expected to be the largest in the world. As well as the well-preserved Hassan Tower, there are still remnants of the old walls of the mosque and ruined stone columns.
For more sandstone architecture, head to the impressive Kasbah of the Udayas, overlooking the mouth of the river and out to sea. This old walled-city fortress is even more impressive inside, where it is peppered with picture-postcard pretty white and blue buildings, beautiful murals and intricately decorated doors. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V is another unmissable stop for an insight into the heady days of the resplendent caliphate, where it is almost impossible to resist the allure of the highly decorative mosaic, gold and marble work on display inside this royal family tomb.
Delve back even further into the history of Rabat at the Chellah; the majestic ruins of a medieval fortified necropolis, complete with authentic castle walls. Its history stretches back to the Phoenicians and Romans, with Roman walls still extant on the site. If you&rsquo;d rather look forward than back in time, Rabat&rsquo;s modern art museum is housed in a beautiful building, open since 2014, with a collection composed of the works of 200 Moroccan artists.

Magical Baltic Capitals

Also known as Aswan, this city located in the south of Egypt is known for being the starting point for many of the visits to Abu Simbel. Due to the flooding of the Nile riverbed, the Egyptians built both a high and low dam in the area to prevent flooding, but in both constructions the environmental impact was not taken into account, and due to the rising levels of Lake Nasser the temples of Nubia and Abu Simbel suffered flooding damage. Thanks to a UN campaign to preserve the monuments, different countries of the world collaborated in the transfer of the temples to the interior, away from the river banks.

Aswan

The gigantic Egyptian capital stretches for kilometers. The Alabaster Mosque is one of the visual references of the city, as well as the citadel of Saladino, a medieval Islamic fortification that can be seen from different parts of the city.
One of the great attractions of any trip to Cairo is to get lost in the Jan el-Jalili souk, a network of narrow streets covered with numerous stalls where you can find all kinds of items: from the famous shishas, incense, papyri, spices or poufs made from camel skin, to clothing, antiques and costume jewellery. El Cairo

The necropolis of Giza is one of the greatest treasures of Ancient Egypt. Located within the site are the famous pyramids of Khafre, Menkaure and the great pyramid of Giza, Khufu, considered one of the best preserved and one of the seven wonders of the world. Located on the outskirts of Cairo, these three imposing monuments are one of the main tourist attractions, as well as the enormous figure of the Sphinx, the animal with the body of a lion and a human head whose nose was destroyed by Napoleonic troops. A visit to the great pyramid of Giza allows the traveler to enter a giant network of low-lying tunnels that lead to the King's chamber, where an empty sarcophagus is found. In the surroundings, other visitors have the opportunity of taking a camel ride between the different pyramids, for an exciting, unique experience.

Giza

Known as the ancient city of Thebes, Luxor was the capital of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt built by the pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramses II. An archaeological center of great relevance where you can find the pillars of the famous temples of Luxor and Karnak, linked together by an avenue of sphinxes and considered a world heritage by UNESCO. Dedicated to the god Amun, you can expect to see columns, obelisks, bas-reliefs and calendars sculpted in the rock. It is also where the mysterious sculpture of an Egyptian beetle is found, which legend suggests has the power to grant wishes. The Luxor area also includes other renowned places of interest such as the Valley of the Kings, the ancient necropolis where the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt were buried. One of the most important findings was the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. A few meters away is the Valley of the Queens, where the funeral chamber of Nefertari was found. Finally, on a trip to Egypt and Luxor you should not miss the Colossi of Memnon, two stone sculptures on the banks of the Nile that represent Amenhotep III.

The Nile River has two tributaries: the White Nile, which is born in Burundi and passes through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda, South Sudan and Sudan; and the Blue Nile, which originates in Lake Tana, crosses Ethiopia and reaches Sudan, where it meets the northern part of the river.
